Love your work. Could you give me a brief explanation of why you lay down the color base you do only to paint over it?

I understand a little about under-painting but not as much as I should.

when you start with a color base, your colors will be more vibrant ad you don't have to work as hard when you are painting. Typically most of my work id primarily colored pencils. so the base color is key. Colored pencils are transparent so that under color is really important

So, when you choose a color base for your ground, are you just going for the complimentary color of whatever your going to pencil on top of it or are you thinking about the color you want to have represented in the shadow?

Thanks so much for the info. It's interesting that you use colored pencils to "build up" and model out the piece. I've always thought you used them just to finish off a piece. I will give this a try and again thanks so much for ht info.
